Grand Rounds: Cardiovascular Interventions on a Fork: Changing Outcomes Through Culinary Medicine

Presented by Kimberly Parks, DO, Massachusetts General Hospital, with discussant, Deepak Bhatt, MD, MPH, Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Data show that approximately 80% of deaths related to heart disease are attributable to lifestyle factors, with dietary factors contributing to half of these deaths. Despite this, the average physician has received only 14.3 hours of formal education in nutrition during the training years and is ill equipped to appropriately advise patients. There is growing interest in how food can be used to help manage disease, as many patients seek alternatives to medications. With available data online, understanding healthful eating can be confusing to both patients and clinicians.

In this Presentation

Data supporting specific dietary patterns that have been shown to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease will be presented, including areas of opportunity to use “Food as Medicine.”

Dr. Parks will describe how she applies an evidence-based approach to her current culinary medicine practice, including a specific case of a patient with advanced coronary disease who will share his experience using an integrative approach to his heart disease. Discussant, Dr. Bhatt, will provide an overview of the traditional approach including peripheral intervention, surgery and medications to manage cardiovascular disease.
