Grand Rounds- The Meharry-Vanderbilt Health Coaching Program: Lessons from Training First Year Medical Students

At this month’s Integrative Medicine Grand Rounds, Ruth Q. Wolever, PhD and colleagues spoke about training first year medical students at Meharry Medical College (MMC) in health coaching through a partnership with the Vanderbilt Health Coaching Program. She was joined by Mark Dreusicke, MD; Solon Bass, BA, RRT; Kim Wyche-Etheridge, MD, MPH & Regina Offodile, MD, to share multiple perspectives on three years of this iterative and innovative curriculum.

MMC in partnership with the VHCCP has created and delivered training to 368 first year medical students across the past 3 years to: 1) provide a solid foundation in patient-centered communication; 2) immediately engage medical students in an allowable, interpersonal healthcare role with direct patient contact; 3) train them in the basics of sustainable behavior change so they can empower patients to be activated in their own healthcare; and 4) guide students to manage their own goal-setting and self-care.
