Alcohol and Chronic Disease – Making Sense of the Mess

Dr. Mukamal will discuss the metabolism of ethanol and its evolution, demonstrated effects of alcohol in randomized trials, and how these factors contribute to a more nuanced understanding of alcohol and chronic disease.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Mukamal has been a primary care internist at BIDMC since 1994.  He currently serves as Associate Chief for Research in General Medicine and as Associate Director of the Internal medicine residency program there.  His research has focused on modifiable determinants of cardiometabolic disease and especially on alcohol consumed within currently recommended limits. He chaired the 2011 Expert Panel on Alcohol and Chronic Disease Epidemiology for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and co-authored the 2025 Scientific Statement on Alcohol and Cardiovascular Disease for the American Heart Association.
