Research Seminar: Pain in Arthritis and Why It Hurts

Pain in Arthritis: Why Does it Hurt?

Presenter: Yvonne Lee, MD, MMSc received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and a Masters in Medical Sciences from Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (Washington University in St. Louis) and her fellowship in rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  She is now an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is also the Director of Pain Research in the Division of Rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Lee is the Principal Investigator of an NIH-funded study investigating the role of central pain mechanisms in response to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs for rheumatoid arthritis. Her previous studies have shown that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis have heightened sensitivity to pain in a widespread distribution, and the mechanisms regulating this pain sensitivity are associated with sleep disturbances.
