We invite you to join us on Tuesday, November 3 at 12:00pm ET for our November Integrative Medicine Grand Rounds: Harvard Medical School Distinguished Lecture in Mind Body Research and Health, featuring distinguished lecturer, Dr. Eric Garland.
LECTURE
“Mindfulness‑Oriented Recovery Enhancement: Unifying Neuroscience, Clinical Innovation, and Mind‑Body Medicine to Transform the Future of Pain and Addiction Care.”
This Distinguished Lecture will present twenty years of mechanistic, clinical, and translational research on Mindfulness‑Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE), a neuroscience‑informed, evidence‑based mind‑body intervention designed to transform the treatment of chronic pain, addiction, and emotional suffering. MORE integrates mindfulness training, cognitive reappraisal, and savoring of natural rewards to drive targeted neuroplasticity in the brain. Drawing on findings from sixteen randomized controlled trials, neurophysiological studies, cost effectiveness research, and large‑scale implementation efforts, the lecture will illustrate how MORE reshapes attention, emotion, and meaning to support recovery, healing, and resilience. Attendees will learn how these mechanistic insights translate into measurable clinical improvements, including reductions in opioid misuse, craving, pain severity, and healthcare utilization. The session will offer a forward‑looking vision for the future of mind‑body medicine, showing how MORE is being integrated with psychedelics, neurofeedback, and closed‑loop precision medicine interventions to help shape the next generation of behavioral health care.
SPEAKER
Eric Garland, PhD is Endowed Professor in Health Sciences at the T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at University of California San Diego (UCSD), Director of UCSD ONEMIND (Optimized Neuroscience-Enhanced Mindfulness Intervention Design), and the Founder of MORE Science Institute. Dr. Garland is the developer of Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE), an evidence-based, neuroscience-informed therapy for addiction, emotional distress, and chronic pain that has been hailed as one of the greatest breakthroughs in behavioral treatment in the past 30 years. He has over 300 scientific publications and has received more than $95 million in research grants from federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DOD) to develop and test MORE and related therapies for addiction and chronic pain. In 2019, he was appointed by NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins to the NIH HEAL Multi-Disciplinary Working Group comprised of national experts on pain and addiction research to help guide the nation’s $2+ billion HEAL initiative to use science to halt the opioid crisis. Dr. Garland has briefed federal leaders on MORE as a treatment for opioid use disorder: in 2023, Dr. Garland briefed the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and in 2024, he was invited to the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill to brief the Congressional Addiction Treatment and Recovery Caucus. Dr. Garland is also a licensed psychotherapist and Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, with more than 20 years of clinical experience. In multiple bibliometric analyses of mindfulness research published over the past 55 years, Dr. Garland was found to be the most prolific author of mindfulness research in the world.
